I just love the effort and the 'heart' Chavez plays with. Like in the 2nd when he jogged down to first when Sexson misplayed the ball.
Rather than run even at 80% of full speed he jogged so the 2nd baseman could eventually pick up the ball and throw him out.
What a leader.
What I don't understand is these games are meaningless!!!.
Why in the hell doesn't Macha play the young kids?
But yet Kendall, Kotsay, Chavez, Hatteburg continue to play.

The latest from the wonderful world of the keystone beat writers...sans any of the ridiculous talk of bringing back Ken Macha (I'll wait until Sunday for that).
Susan Slusser is reporting that Eric Chavez is looking at possibly facing shoulder surgery.
This is another in a long line of terrible writing by a sportswriter. Nowhere in the article do you learn what is the precise problem with the shoulder. Just that Chavez might have an MRI and might be facing surgery. Well, I might be hungry and I might be eating lunch.
To his credit, Joe Roderick actually has a decent article while talking about the shoulder issue.
For A's fans, the fact to keep in mind is that surgery and a procedure are very different.
Now, having looked at as many reports as I have on Chavez' shoulder in the past I speculated months ago that Chavez is likely suffering from not any structural damage, but a growth on the end of the clavicle. It's just a small hook like protrusion that interferes with all the stuff in the shoulder; the A/C joint, the rotator cuff, the arm pit...the problem is that any problems with a shoulder and the first leap is to rule out rotator cuff problems. Tears and the like are ruled out. The A/C joint gets worked a little and there's not problem there. The athlete can barely get their arm above their ear - but nobody knows what the problem is.
I've had a Modified Mumford procedure and it was like my arm was 10 years younger after a few months of rehab. For years prior to that there was a lot of therapy; throwing class, drills, electro stem, ultrasound, ice, cortisone injections, exercises, hand and forearm exercises and lots of balms, ointments and throwing. The process just to get ready for a 2 hour football practice was often 90 minutes of preparation.
I'm betting that Chavez will have an MRI, which is really unnecessary, but is will help rule out any possible micro-tears in the rotator cuff or any structural damage that has occurred. Really, just angling the shoulder 30 degrees in an x-ray will show an orthopaedic doc what he needs to know. I complained about my arm from high school into my third college year. Tired arm, sore, overuse and just comes with the jobs were usually the excuses. Until a physician actually took the time to get some good looks at the shoulder from a new perspective. Just 30 degrees made all the difference.
More on the Mumford here and I'll see if I can convert the video of my procedure and get it up online over the weekend.
Anyway.
UPDATE 10:30 AM PST"Eric Chavez is headed for surgery in the near future to correct a long-standing shoulder problem. The available symptoms--pain, soreness, lack of throwing power and control--all point to some type of shoulder impingement. The correction for that is likely to be some type of modified Mumford surgery that would open up the space in the shoulder to reduce the impingement. This type of injury isn’t normally seen in position players, though a few pitchers have survived it. It’s not a terribly serious surgery so my guess is that, if this is what Chavez is having, he’ll be back by spring training with a slight downgrade to his throwing arm from third. He’s still a 1."
- Will Carroll, Under the Knife (Baseball Prosectus)
My guess is that Chavez will be reporting earlier than usual to spring training and will actually be able to lift weights for the first time in years. Will this make the difference, will a simple hour long procedure in an outpatient capacity turn Eric Chavez, poor starter, into an All Star?
One could only hope. Chavez has the sword of Damocles hanging over his head in the form of the tag 'most overrated player in baseball'. He does deserve it. The BayArea media have been slow to actually attack Chavez for fear of offending Billy Beane. But it is warranted and long overdue.
Here's another great bit of reporting from the San Jose Mercury News. Apparently, Rich Harden would have started on Monday if it were not for "except for his strained abdominal muscle". Wow. Talk about not knowing the ass from the elbow. The Lat is as near the abdomen as the chest or groin.
Zach,
Interesting piece on chavy. Could you happen to tell me the name of your orthopedic doc? I've had a bum elbow for 8 years now. Finally gave up after 3 arthroscopies (the last in 1999). Been getting worse recently so was thinking of going back to the doc again for a fresh look.
Thanks for this post. Lots of good information from someone who knows of which he speaks.
Chavvy has not looked right throwing from third base all season.
I'm wondering -- why would Chavvy have a downgrade in his throwing arm after such a procedure?
Did anyone else just love macha's quote in Slusser's Zito article, "I really like what happened with Barry this year,'' Macha said. "He's always the third guy (of the Big Three); Hudson started Opening Day, Mulder started Opening Day. Zito was that guy this year, the lead guy. He's graduated to that next level.''
Did Macha forget about his cy young season?
if barry zito had gotten any run support this season he might have had a cy young like campaign......Joe Blanton is @ this moment 11-12 with a 3.50 era. Danny Haren is like 14-11 with a 4.10 era. Im not saying joe is that much better than danny im saying danny got some more run support.

- The Art of War - SANCTUARY
The Elephants in Oakland Squad Car V2.0 is headed toward the coliseum tonight. We'll be sitting in the rightfield bleachers as always. It is sanctuary. And leftfield sucks.
Why go to an A's game when they were just eliminated from the playoff race? For one, Kerry and I are season ticket holders. We go to a lot of games. The Silent Benefactor had RiverCats season tickets, so we went to a lot of Sacramento's games. We even made the trip to Stockton and got out alive on several occasions. We have taken the trek to Arizona for spring training the last two years. I've flown to the East Coast to catch the A's in Cleveland.
We're A's fans. Where the green and gold are, that's where you'll find us.
To put the correct label on 2005, it is disappointment and failure. Anyone who tries to spin it as a success and positive is trying to sell you something. The A's had a chance to make the playoffs and failed miserably - on August 29th the A's were a 79% chance to make the post season. Three weeks later is was less than 10%. There are no excuses, nor should any be tolerated, for failure on that grand of a scale.
Does that mean we should stop watching, listening, reading and venting? No. It means we should watch more, listen more, read more and vent more. The only way to incite change is to reveal that change is necessary. The A's have wrapped themselves in a cocoon of positive vibes from the media and its fan base - seemingly. But anyone can tell you from the attendance that the majority of A's fans are, indeed, quite pissed off enough to stay away in droves.
So, grab yourself a seat tonight and come wandering over if you need some KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce for your $1 hotdog. I think I'm going to try to keep 3 down. But, you never can tell once you get there.
Quite telling.
I wonder if all of the people who have A's websites and blogs are actually season ticket holders?
Funny, but I bet some aren't. And I bet they keep trying to sell me T-Shirts and how the 2005 were 'magical'.
Hell, if they didn't win a championshp they didn't do a damn thing.
Right on the money, Zach.
The extent to which the same old genius GM/scrappy young team/patient manager/low payroll underdog GARBAGE gets trotted out in the local media again and again and again...
Dear Bay Area Media: There is a real, actual story here. The story is that the opposing team has celebrated on the A's home field 5 out of the last 6 years now. The story is that the Billy Beane-era Oakland Athletics have choked like dogs every year. A's fans know how this shit is going to end!
Billy Beane really does need someone to tell him, to his face, that his teams choke like dogs and that passionate fans of his team want no part of it- and that's why there's no one in the stands.
Enjoy the game Zach.
I was there last night and watched the Angels celebrate.
I was there the second to last game of last season when the Angels celebrated.
And I'll be there near the end of next season, hopefully watching the A's celebrate.
These posts are some of the best reading in a long time. Much appreciated.
Zach, you touched on it in the last post: Why was Macha allowed to manage this season in the first place? I can't believe 2005 was actually a worse job than 2004, but I really think it was.
Not that Beane would do it, but what would a feasible return on trading Chavez be at this point? I can think of SD, but the only player of value they have is Peavy. Towers is no idiot. Right? Now, Dan O'Brien, that's another story.
Why'd they resign Kotsay? Was this another case of Beane going the route of self-validating? He traded for him, he's going to re-up him? Beane talks about statistics and objectivity, but if anything, he has his fervent favorites: Chavez (b/c he broke all of Beane's HS records?), Kotsay (look, we value defense!), Kendall, Swisher (the infatuation in Moneyball), Durazo (the acclaimed holy grail).
When Beane talks about leadership and veteran presence re: Kendall, I can't tell if he's being sarcastic. I thought I used to be able to tell. I just don't want to see Payton's option get picked up, but I think this may be another one of those self-affirming cases. Beane traded for him, ergo... he resigns him.
Zito is the big-name guy the Athletics could trade that would affect them the least on the field.
Chavez isn't the hitter they thought he would be, and probably never will be. The Athletics still need him.
If the Atletics could get a genuine power hitting outfielder in return for Zito, they should do it.
By the way, Kirk Saarloos's peripheral stats this year are perfect indicators of a lucky pitcher who can only decline. Trade him now!
ever since kotsay re-signed he's been crappy. Wonder how they didnt realize his crappy back..How abt rookies for next year..any good ones down the pipeline?. Angels seem to be loaded in that department
I've got lots and lots of good info on the off season and 2006.
The problem is, if I post it now, what will kepp you coming back in December and January?
THANK YOU!
I'm glad Zach's not afraid to speak the truth on the A's 2005. This whole "we should just be happy for the season they gave us" claptrap is killing me. Are you telling me all the optimists have accepted losing? What's their excuse going to be next year and the year after that?
Suffering through the first six weeks and last three weeks of this season was painful enough, but the thought that the Susan Slusser/Billy Beane spin doctor machine will be in full force in the next few days might be more than I can take.
Thankfully, I can come here and have the giggling schoolgirl crap ("CROSBY'S HOT!!!") and rampant homerism filtered for me.
Someone's gotta do it, Zach.
Just wait, someone is going to write a gushing book about the 2005 Oakland Athletics.
The Beane-era Athletics desperately need more books written about them.
Eventually we will have one book for every year's choke job.
OK, it sounds like I'II draw fire from all comers here by saying I enjoyed the season. Did the A's choke in September-no, I don't think so. The A's had a relatively young team, some terrible injuries, some bad luck and were coached by a lame-duck manager. They couldv'e rolled over and played dead in June but they competed...what else do you want? Do I wish they had made the play-offs? - hell ya. Was I disappointed and frustrated when they got their asses handed to them in August/September? Sure. But holy shit, some of you guys are sounding like you watched Tampa Bay play this year. Christ, some of you guys can't manage your checking account-never mind a MLB team. Give it a break and go grab yourself a ticket and enjoy the last 2 games and cheer them on in Seattle.
what big elephant said... & btw i dont know if the a's need jay payton nextyear..but i do know they need another right handed bat...a paul konerko type or something for that middle of the order....i also know matt watson has gotta play to see if this year was a fluke
I've got a different Macha Meter ready for the off season. Watch as soon as the A's 27th out is recorded on Sunday.
I'II be watching and waiting to read your comments Zach. I think this will be a pivotal off-season and I'm interested on your take of things.

Wow. Ken Macha. Putting Adam Melhuse at DH...that'll save 2005.
What a brilliant strategy.
I told you in the spring that Macha would cost us a half-dozen games in the standings with his stupidity, as opposed to standard guessing wrong.
Even my defense of him after the 40-10 spurt didn't mitigate that. Oh well, huh?
Keep up the good work, Zach.
If anyone is interested in 4 inexpensive tickets (sect 316 or 317) to tomorrow (Wednesday) night's game, let me know (sdshelby[at]ucd...s.edu).
zach with all the talk about how bad macha is & his playing of certain regulars....what about the good. There gotta be alotta good for team that may come close to 90 wins again. Considering there is but a few teams out there doing that (i would love to point out eric wedge is a 3 yr manager smart enuf to group his best hitters together...a fact pointed out a few weeks ago when the tribe played the a's....) i still think this team accomplished something maybe in spite of ken macha. Either way what i do know is that the a's have the best 2 rookies in the AL (clearly blanton & street) & perhaps in all of baseball. I would like @ some point to see who EIO thinx should get rookie of the year. Either way zach thx for the info its always appreciated
Really, we've been eliminated for days now. The plus of tonight's game is that Crosby and Harden won't be used anymore this year, meaning that our two best young players won't be any more badly injured going into next year.

RING OF FIRE
Just a note for anyone interested - a group of us including Stephen Shelby and Kerry are headed to the game tomorrow night. If you need KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce for your $1 hot dog - we'll have it.
And so it begins. For the second year in a row the Angels are going to celebrate winning the AL West Championship on the Oakland Coliseum turf. Or what is left of it. Be it Tuesday night or Wednesday night, it's going to happen.
I got this thrown back in my face in seven different emails this weekend:
"There are no excuses for 2004, only blame. But 2004 was a direct result of 2003."
And this...
"If the A's can be a .500 club into July, you know Beane can make a move at the trading deadline to ready the club for the stretch drive. Have no allusions to the situation."
There were also several emails about Ken Macha and what a moron he is.
What is odd is that people who don't understand baseball do not really understand why Ken Macha deserves the blame laid at his feet. They think that this site and the readers bitch about Macha just to blame somebody. Ugh, no. Macha deserves the blame because he writes the lineup. If you want to counter that with something along the lines of, 'Billy Beane instructs Macha whom to put in the lineup', then Macha deserves even more blame for not disagreeing with Beane and telling him why.
The heavy hand that Billy Beane is rumored to have is not really there. Ken Macha often has his quote, "the players write the lineup." The problem is that Ken Macha has tried to be a 'player's manager' by giving the pen to write the line-up card to the veterans. That means Jason Kendall, even when he's not effective, Scott Hatteberg and even Eric Chavez when is on an 0 for binge. And the coddling of Nick Swisher has got to be the last straw. There are three other rookies on the A's that performed better than Swisher, yet it's this braindead hick who gets all of the print media and publicity supplied by the front office is given a free ride. You don't think Nick Swisher is Ben Grieve? Then you haven't been an A's fan long enough to be able to read the writing on the wall.
The simple fact is the A's have choked down the stretch the last two years. That should be all you need to know about Ken Macha as a manager. In 2004 the A's had a three game lead over the Angels with 9 to play and blew it.
In 2005 the A's were tied for the AL West lead on the 3rd of September at 76-59. A little more than two weeks later and the A's are down by five, FIVE games. What's more pathetic is how the A's have played, with little excitement or passion at the job at h
